TECNO has been known for its dedication in reducing skin tone bias and improving inclusive imaging technology. As expected, the company constantly improves its Universal Tone (UT) technology with a larger skin tone database, ensuring an even more accurate representation.
Upgraded Color Card
One huge improvement is their upgraded color card — from the previous 268 to now a whopping 372 skin tone patches. But that doesn’t stop there.
There are also enhancements to the Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine, which achieves significant improvement in skin tone accuracy.
These upgrades ensure more accurate and inclusive skin tone representation in mobile imaging across diverse ethnicities and scenarios.
Expanded Skin Tone Database
TECNO’s improved color card helps its cameras capture more diverse and accurate skin tones — especially in Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.
This upgraded card not only increases the number of patches but also, enhances the scientific and practical application of skin tone measurement and quantification. This makes it a critical calibration tool for Universal Tone algorithms.
Speaking of, the improved Universal Tone algorithm uses a better dataset to capture and represent a wider range of skin tones more accurately.
Partnering with top universities such as University of Leeds and Dar Al-Hekma University, they created a Saudi-specific color card with 186 skin tone patches.
This demonstrates TECNO’s dedication to accurate skin tone representation in Saudi Arabia. This regional card allows TECNO to further refine its Universal Tone algorithm for local skin tones, lighting, and scenarios meant for the Arabian market.
Enhanced Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration Engine
TECNO improved its Multi-Skin Tone Color Restoration engine with better color calibration and white balance algorithms together with these enhancements:
- CCM Skin Tone Calibration Algorithm — uses TECNO’s new Multi-skin Tone Color Card that ensures precise color correction.
- Spectrum-Based Automatic White Balance (AWB) Algorithm — improves color balance and exposure for different skin tones in the same photo.
Trained using TECNO’s improved color card, this results in over 50% more accurate skin tones with more natural portrait shots even in various lighting and shooting conditions.
Universal Tone also includes an Intelligent Skin-Tone Grading Exposure Algorithm. This adjusts exposure for different skin tones to ensure even tone enhancement and brightness.
Together, these improvements greatly enhance Universal Tone’s ability to restore multi-skin tones, especially in tough conditions like solid color backgrounds and backlighting.
MWC 2025: What to Expect?
At MWC 2025, TECNO will show off this improvement with two color cards, one for darker skin tones and another for the lighter ones.
